Rashid Bashir, Professor of Bioengineering, Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering; Dean, College of Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Rashid Bashir earned his Ph.D. from Purdue University in October 1992, followed by a successful tenure at National Semiconductor until October 1998, where he advanced to Sr. Engineering Manager, leading the development of analog semiconductor process technologies. Joining Purdue University in 1998, he rose to become a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Courtesy Professor of Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering. In 2007, Bashir assumed the Abel Bliss Professor role at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, later becoming the Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering in 2016. Notably, he directed the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory from 2007 to 2013 and co-directed the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology from 2007 to 2013, fostering nanotechnology initiatives. Bashir served as the Head of the Bioengineering Department from 2013 to 2017 and as the Executive Associate Dean and Chief Diversity Officer at Carle-Illinois College of Medicine from 2017 to 2018. In November 2018, he became the 15th Dean of the Grainger College of Engineering. Bashir has authored over 300 journal papers, 200 conference papers, and holds 55 patents. He is a fellow of eight international professional societies. His research focuses on bionanotechnology, BioMEMS, lab-on-a-chip, and semiconductor applications in biomedical engineering, addressing biomedical challenges. His notable contributions include advancements in BioMEMS, biomedical nanotechnology, and 3-D fabrication for tissue engineering. Bashir's leadership extends to startups and various advisory roles, reflecting his impactful presence in both academia and industry. Technologies from his lab have been licensed to Prenosis, Inc. and VedaBio, Inc. He is a member of National Academy of Medicine and National Academy of Inventors.
