JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Mayo Clinic and Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation announced today a research collaboration centered on improving organ transplant outcomes.

Beginning in April, Mayo Clinic biomedical researchers and Terasaki Institute scientists will work together on two core areas: real-time monitoring of donated organ health from procurement to transplant surgery and developing predictive technologies to determine which transplant recipients have a higher likelihood of rejection. That will be done by creating prognostic signatures and assays for antibody-mediated rejection of organ transplant. These initial projects are expected to take 24 to 30 months to complete.

New hydrogel features enhanced capabilities for treating aneurysms and halting their progression

(LOS ANGELES) – A novel, injectable shear-thinning hydrogel for treating abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) has been developed by scientists at the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI). This hydrogel not only demonstrates increased effectiveness at sealing off blood flow to AAAs, but also stops the growth of the aneurysms themselves.

(LOS ANGELES) – Vadim Jucaud, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation, has been awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a functional organ-on-a-chip to model allogeneic transplant rejection. Such a model would allow the study of allograft tolerance and may ultimately lead to reducing organ transplant rejections without needing immunosuppressive drugs.

The new year opened with a bang for the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI), with the long-awaited completion of TIBI’s brand-new 50,000 square foot facility in Woodland Hills. TIBI scientists and staff made the big move to the new building at the end of February 2023.

In addition to the ample space and unique design features of the new building, the facility houses expansive laboratory work areas, fully arrayed with scientific equipment, as well as accommodations for meetings and seminars. This will allow for greater research capabilities and growth of the institute.

The Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI) is pleased to announce the summer junior biomedical internship program for 2024. The Institute will continue to offer summer internships for college undergraduate students interested in biomedical research or entrepreneurship. 

The institute is comprised of interdisciplinary research scientists, as well as in-house innovators, who work quickly to translate their technology to real-world applications. The internship program aims to expose students to multiple fields of research to empower them to think creatively and to inspire them to explore and pursue STEM career paths.
